Microsoft Windows, one flavor or another, is the most common desktop operating system in the world today. Along with the desktop it also has a significant share of the server market. Consequently securing your Windows environment is an important and urgent task.

At C3SC we offer scalable solutions for securing Windows environments and we can help justify expenditure through ROI analysis.

The foundation of Windows security is good patch management, i.e. the application of software fixes released by Microsoft, but applied in a safe and structured way.

A core security service involves operating system patch management. We will design an infrastructure to automate updates but still keep you in control of what enters your environment.

& Windows NT 4.0

Still getting the most out of your legacy machines? Not a problem. We will not just tell you to upgrade to the latest operating systems. Through long experience we understand the cost of upgrades. The overhead of new systems, user training, and licenses must be carefully balanced against the benefits of the upgrades. We will make the best use of your existing equipment, software, and knowledge base to provide cost effective solutions.

Services C3SC will provide:

  • Performance tuning
  • Integration with existing or planned infrastructure
  • OS upgrades
  • Patch maintenance
  • Remote access

Windows 2000 server and workstation editions are still far from end of life. If you already have a Windows 2000 environment we will help you with integration and surface area reduction. We will implement Active Directory and demonstrate how you can centrally manage and control your deployed machines. However, if you have a business requirement, or need help making the justification, we will plan and execute an upgrade for one, some, or all your machines and ensure continuity of service.

Windows XP (SP2) is a very secure operating system. However, making the most of the included functionality and management utilities takes time and knowledge. Let C3SC survey you environment and show you what improvements could be made and how to realize the full potential of your existing investment.

At the server level, we will harden the operating system and optimize the machine for its given tasks.

We will develop and implement an authentication strategy that, while securing your users, is still transparent, making optimum use of existing Windows functionality. And if you connect to external networks, for vendor or customer communication, we will ensure that not only are you safe but also ensure you stay safe by preventing security violations in your partners networks from domino-ing into yours.

We will tune both your servers and workstations to remove the “single point of failure” weaknesses inherent in isolated security solutions. By a coordinated approach, examining your environment as a whole, we will ensure your security plan is balanced and appropriate.

We have been working with beta and release candidate versions for nearly a year. There are many security enhancements for both big business and small. We will summarize the changes and what the benefits could be to you. If you are still running Windows 2000 you might consider skipping an upgrade to Windows XP and go straight to Vista and minimize the disruption to your environment. Look at our Deployment pages and the Vista section for more information.

Need to grant admin access for a single app to a specific user or group?
Don't just give out root. Use Sudo to define and control admin access to all resources - and you are the admin, do the same thing for yourself. You will be much less likely to step on yourself.
Folder views.
If you want all your files and folders to be listed the same way in Explorer, display the format you want in the right pane, e.g. details view, sorted by file type. Then Tools>Folder Options and the Views tab. Hit the Apply to All Folders button and the next time you traverse to a folder it will be in your "standard " display format.
