Wireless

Print view

With the advent of wireless networking a new security vulnerability has been created. Unfortunately, despite warnings and media coverage, the risks presented often go unheeded. Although the effective range is shorter, the same principles should be applied to bluetooth devices.

Fortunately, Active Directory Groups Policy Object (GPOs) have very granular control over wireless devices. Both who can connect, and what security controls are used, can be centrally defined and mandated for all users.

C3SC will show you how to maintain and administer secure wireless networks.

C3SC will:

  • survey your environment and create a wireless infrastructure, integrated into your existing network
  • configure and implement appropriate security protocols based on types of wireless devices, required communications, and topology
  • compartmentalize wireless segments with internal firewalls and implement personal firewalls on wireless devices
  • integrate existing or planned digital certificates, such as smart cardsIPSec and VPNs to further enhance security
  • provide policy statements and guidelines for the use and control of your wireless networks
  • implement SNMP for monitoring wireless access points
  • deploy access control lists based on MAC address of wireless devices

Did you know?
Many security initiatives fail to have longevity.
Because they are not presented to senior management as a business need they lack the authority to be prioritized.
Size does matter - passwords.
Make it longer, using upper and lower case, with numbers and special characters. Don't forget spaces and punctuation points can frequently be used to make more memorable, but still secure, pass phrases.
Spam problems?
Microsoft filters out over three billion spam messages a day.
Frozen Explorer session?
If your explorer session has stopped responding, hit CTRL+SHFT+ESC to bring up taskmanager. On the processes tab, look for explorer.exe in the Image Name column and hit the End Process button. Your windows session will now seem to disappear. It can be restarted in taskmanager by going to File>New Task (Run) and typing explorer.exe.
Wireless networks are more vulnerable to hackers - so they need additional protection.
Encryption technologies such as Wi-Fi Protected Access can help. Although there are weaknesses with WEP, some legacy systems do not support more modern protocols like WPA, and so WEP is still better than nothing and will deter most casual eavesdropping.
